Depression in Bay mars Odisha with heavy rains, more in offing

November 5, 2016 1:12 PM | Skymet Weather Team

As predicted by Skymet Weather, heavy to very heavy rains have lashed several parts of Coastal Odisha. All thanks to the depression over west-central Bay of Bengal, around 470 km south-southwest of Kolkata, 210 km southeast of Paradip and 480 km southsouthwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Paradip recorded 98 mm of rainfall. This was followed by Chandbali with 76 mm, Puri 57 mm, Balasore 43 mm, Bhubaneswar 17 mm, and Gopalpur 9 mm.

Further, the system is now moving in east-northeast direction towards Bangladesh. So, with the weather system moving away, rain will reduce over Odisha. However, moderate showers with isolated heavy rains will continue over the coastal areas of the states during the next 24 hours. Rains will reduce further thereafter.

These rains will also be accompanied with the squally winds with speed of 45-55 kmph gusting up to 65 kmph along and off the coast. Sea conditions will remain rough to very rough and fishermen are advised not to venture out in the sea for at least 24 to 48 hours.

Coastal Odisha has been witnessing on and off rains of varying intensity since last few days. Initially Cyclone Kyant was responsible was pounding rains over the coastal state and now, it is this system.
