Rain gods have been too kind to Jamshedpur for the past few days. So much so that the city has been receiving heavy rains for quite some time now. These incessant showers can be attributed to the weather system which developed in the Bay of Bengal.
During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday to 5:30 am on Friday, Jamshedpur recorded a whopping 84 mm of rain. A day before as well the city had received 85 mm of rainfall and 219 mm of rainfall was witnessed on Wednesday.
The weather system which had developed over Northwest Bay of Bengal underwent through multiple intensifications. Until yesterday afternoon, the weather system was a deep depression and was hovering around North Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal.
At present, the system has weakened into a depression and remains stationary over Jharkhand and adjoining West Bengal about 200 km northeast of Ranchi in Jharkhand and 220 km east southeast of Gaya in Bihar.
Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas will continue to witness moderate to heavy rains during the next 24 hours. The possibility of a few very heavy spells also cannot be ruled out.
So far, Jamshedpur has recorded a whopping 554.6 mm of rain against its monthly average rainfall of 328.4 mm. It has been a mere 12 days and Jamshedpur has already surpassed monthly rain records. Until now, the city has received the highest monthly rains in eight years.
The decade high monthly mean rains stand at 611.8 mm which was recorded in 2007 and the all time high is 626.3 observed in the year 1971. With heavy rains in the offing and more than two weeks in hand, Jamshedpur will easily be able to surpass its monthly rains.
