Dense fog witnessed in Delhi; could worsen tomorrow

January 20, 2014 1:38 PM |

Just as we predicted, today dense fog engulfed Delhi and entire North India morning with visibility dropping to nil in many pockets of Delhi and NCR. Parts of East India and North Madhya Pradesh in Central India also woke up to a cold and foggy morning. Fog remained mainly moderate in Uttar Pradesh with dense only in isolated pockets.

Fog in Delhi remained only shallow yesterday but today it was dense to very dense because of southwesterly winds which provided enough moisture for fog to form. And since the winds remained light fog did not lift till 11 am in the capital as well as in Uttar Pradesh”, explained Mahesh Palawat, senior meteorologist at Skymet Weather.

Here’s a look at the visibility chart at 6 am and 10:30 am today

Forecast show there could be no relief from fog in Delhi tomorrow. A trough from Gujarat to Haryana will feed moisture in the form of humid southeasterly winds to Delhi and North India. “Fog in Delhi could remain dense, just as today or could even worsen further”, added Palawat.

A blanket of thick fog in Delhi today, delayed around 30 flights (between 6 am to 9 am) by over thirty minutes. And tomorrow too will be a day of hassle for travelers and airport authorities. Whereas dense fog in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and north Madhya Pradesh could lead to major rail delays in the morning hours.

Today, fog in Delhi began clearing up only 11 am onwards however the visibility in Agra improved at around 12 pm. Tomorrow too, widespread fog in Delhi, North India, parts of East and Central India could be dense till atleast 9 am.
