Dense fog to spread evenly over next 3 days in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi

January 7, 2015 3:52 PM |

Fog has been inconspicuous in most parts of Delhi/NCR and other parts of northwest India for last couple of days. However, dense fog is now making a comeback as the feeble western disturbance is signing off from the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.

Strong northwesterly winds were not allowing fog to settle in North India but wind speed has reduced now. Thereby, Delhiites woke up to a foggy morning. Most parts of the national capital observed dense to very dense fog. The visibility at the Delhi airport dropped down to nil causing major flight delays.

The envelope of fog is likely to spread out evenly in Punjab, Haryana, parts of Uttar Pradesh and Pakistan region over the next few days. No rain is likely in northwest India till the coming weekend, allowing northwesterly winds to keep hovering over the area.

Cold day conditions in Northwest India

Maximum temperature depends on the time when fog disperses from a particular area. Fog invariably fades away by forenoon hours and only couple of hours are left for temperatures to rise. Therefore cold day conditions are likely to prevail across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Minimum temps to show a marginal drop and remain below normal at most places.

Here’s a look at the temperatures in Punjab recorded on December 7.

Several places in Haryana are also witnessing cold day conditions. Day temperatures in Ambala and Karnal are 7 degrees below normal at 11.8°C and 12°C, respectively.

No major change in temperature profile is likely till the arrival of a fresh Western Disturbance on January 12. Under the influence of the system, higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will receive snow and rain.
