Dense fog to persist over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, UP, Bihar

January 29, 2018 11:51 AM | Skymet Weather Team

This winter season, foggy conditions had made an appearance very late. In fact, the month of December had remained almost fog free. Only parts of Punjab had witnessed dense fog during this period.

Moreover, Delhi remained almost fog free until January 25. Not only this, dense fog which was persisting over Northern Plains also remained absent until this time.

The reason for these fog free days can be attributed to the fairly widespread rains which occurred over many parts of Northern Plains along with Uttar Pradesh and parts of Bihar on January 22 and 23. Thus, entire Indo Gangetic Plains witnessed lifting of fog during this time.

However, both Uttar Pradesh and Bihar did witness continuous dense fog. Due to this, prolonged cold day conditions were seen over East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Now, after a short break, fog has once again engulfed entire Indo Gangetic Plains right from Punjab to Bihar. Today, the visibility at Amritsar, Agra, and Varanasi were nil. Meanwhile, Delhi observed very dense fog with the visibility dropping to 50 metres.

We expect these foggy conditions to persist for at least another 48 hours. Thereafter, intensity of fog will reduce over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi as well as West Uttar Pradesh. However, Bihar may continue with dense fog thereafter as well.

With this, maximum temperatures will witness a rise by 2 to 3 degrees over these areas. Cold day conditions which have been prevailing over many parts of Punjab will also abate and sunny days will make an appearance.
