With Christmas, dense fog has finally arrived over the northwestern plains of the country. Tuesday morning saw visibility dropping to zero at various parts of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. This year, dense fog has made a delayed arrival as compared to previous years.

Further, fog is likely to tighten its grip over parts of northwestern plains now. According to Skymet Weather, we can expect dense to very dense fog over the region during the next 2-3 days.

As per weathermen, weather conditions are conducive as all the factors required for the formation of fog are present in the atmosphere. Light winds, low minimum temperatures and moisture are the three prominent conditions for fog.

Due to the prevalence of cold northwesterly winds, minimum temperatures have decreased all across the plains. Moreover, the speed of winds is light to very light. Besides this, passage of week Western Disturbances in the higher latitudes is providing moisture in the atmosphere.

Hence, dense fog prevailed over many parts of the region. Places such as Sriganganagar, Bhatinda, Churu, Rewari, Narnaul, Hisar, Bhiwani, Amritsar and Delhi recorded dense to very dense fog, with visibility varying from 0 to 50 meters.

Till December 28, dense to very dense fog is expected to engulf the northwestern plains. Thereafter, there might be some improvement but that would be marginal one only.

Also, these conditions foggy conditions would also be staying for a longer duration now. This would be instrumental in further drop in day temperatures.
