On December 25, many areas of Central and East Uttar Pradesh witnessed dense to very dense fog. According to Skymet Weather, in wake of the cyclonic circulation over the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh, the winds had became light in nature.
Moreover, change in wind pattern from dry northwesterlies to moist easterlies has increased the levels of humidity in the atmosphere. All these factors were conducive for the formation of fog over parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Now, northwesterly winds are pushing this fog belt towards the east. On the early morning of December 26, most places in East Uttar Pradesh and West Bihar was engulfed in dense fog. The visibility decreased to nil in Sultanpur and Lucknow on Tuesday morning.
Bahraich and Varanasi also observed dense fog, with visibility less than 50 meters. As per Skymet Weather, dense to very dense fog is likely to persist over parts of East Uttar Pradesh and many parts of Bihar for at least next 48 hours.

Though the intensity of fog will reduce gradually over East Uttar Pradesh but it will continue to engulf many parts of Bihar. Places such as Patna, Muzzafarpur, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Sultanpur, and Allahabad would observe visibility less than 100 meters on December 27.
Whenever dense fog persists for a longer duration over any area, it leads to decrease in day temperatures. Some parts of Uttar Pradesh have been witnessing cold day conditions in the last 24 hours. Cold day conditions are declared when the maximum temperatures remain 16°C or less.
In fact, it is anticipated that the maximum temperatures of East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar would fall further, leading to cold day conditions in many areas.
