At least 30 cars piled-up on Yamuna Expressway on Wednesday morning, as dense fog reduced visibility on the high-speed corridor. At least five were reported to be dead, while several people were seriously injured in the car crash.

The incident took place around 10 am on the carriageway towards Greater Noida when the visibility was almost nil, ranging between 50 meters to 100 meters. Cars were also severely damaged in the crash.

Traffic was also halted for a brief period on the Expressway, before the police officials cleared the way. Yamuna Expressway, a strategic highway connecting Noida to Agra is counted among the accident prone areas, especially during the winters.

As the cold wave has tightened its grip over the plains, North India has been witnessing dense to very dense fog for the past few days, disrupting normal life. Rail, road and air traffic have been severely impacted due to the poor visibility conditions. According to Skymet, dense fog will continue to engulf the region in the coming days as well.
