Delhi Fog: Visibility drops to nil; several flights, trains delayed

In the past 24 hours, dense to very dense fog was observed in most places of Punjab, Haryana and North Rajasthan. In fact, the visibility was also recorded low over the national capital along with most parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Within a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, the visibility was reported to be 200 meters in Delhi and Meerut, whereas it was 80 meters in Hisar.

Meanwhile, visibility dropped to nil in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Patiala and Sriganganagar. As per media report, six people got injured on Monday in a multiple vehicle pileup, due to dense fog on National Highway 1 near Ambala. The visibility was considerably low in the area and hence the incident took place. However the police team reached the accident site on time and cleared the traffic snarl.

However, Lucknow was much better and witnessed clear conditions with visibility of 800 meters.

The reason for this weather condition could be attributed to the light winds and low minimum temperatures as well as clear sky condition during the night. We expect dense fog to persist for another 24 hours in the aforementioned locations.

Meteorologist at Skymet Weather expects the intensity of fog to lessen around November 15 and 16 in wake of a fresh Western Disturbance that would be approaching the Western Himalayas.

This weather system would give isolated rains over Jammu and Kashmir tonight. From tomorrow, we may expect Punjab, parts of Haryana and North Rajasthan to receive scattered rains. Isolated rain is also possible in parts of Delhi and NCR by November 15.

Snowfall may occur over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh which will further add to the nip conditions over the plains of Northwest India.

But after the passage of Western Disturbance, dry and cold winds from the northwest will result in reduction of maximums and minimums across the northwestern plains.

With these approaching rains, humidity levels will increase and temperatures will start decreasing that would result in dense fog over many parts of northwestern plains including Delhi and NCR.
