Dense fog envelops North India again

January 30, 2017 7:34 AM |

Amritsar, Lucknow wake up to very dense fog

Fog showed up in parts of North India during the initial days of the month and then again in mid-January. However, soon, the foggy weather was replaced by sunny weather which persisted for quite a few days now.

But, people residing in the Indo-Gangetic plains including Delhi and NCR, Punjab, Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh woke up to a foggy morning today.

Most of the regions in these states witnessed poor visibility including Delhi-Palam Airport that recorded the visibility dropping to 0 meters. Amritsar, Allahabad and Jammu, all three recorded nil visibility as well. However, Lucknow and Varanasi measured the visibility dropping to 50 meters and 100 meters respectively.

The poor visibility also affected air, road, and rail traffic. 12 flights scheduled to depart from the Indira Gandhi Airport faced delays along with three flights scheduled to arrive. As reiterated by Skymet Weather, the recent episode of rainfall over parts of Delhi and NCR including some pockets of Punjab and Haryana along with few regions of Uttar Pradesh has resulted in the development of dense fog layer over the Indo-Gangetic plains.

Due to these rains, temperatures over these areas dipped leading to a rise in humidity levels. Furthermore, lesser wind speed also became a contributing factor in the development of dense fog over the plains of North India.

Moreover, the similar weather pattern is expected to persist for another two to three days and fog is likely to show up again over plains of North India.
