Dense fog engulfs plains of North and East India

December 31, 2016 8:22 AM |

Fog in IndiaFog has tightened its grip over several parts of the northern and Indo-Gangetic plains on Saturday morning. Gorakhpur and Varanasi continued with dense to very dense fog for many consecutive days now, with visibility dropping to nil.

This was followed by Lucknow with the lowest visibility of 50 meters, while Delhi-NCR and Jaipur reported visibility of 100 meters.

Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar observed moderate fog with visibility of 400 meters, Agartala 500 meters, Ranchi 500 meters and Visakhapatnam 600 meters. At least, 166 trains have been running behind the schedule due to low visibility conditions.

According to Skymet Weather, fog has make a comeback over most parts of North and East India. This can be attributed to the series of cyclonic circulations marked over Delhi and Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar and Northeast India, respectively.

A trough can be seen running between all these circulations across the northern and Indo-Gangetic plains.

These weather systems have changed the wind pattern to relatively warmer and humid easterly winds. Along with this, night temperatures are settling on the lower side and wind speed is also very light. All these factors are apt for the formation of dense to very dense fog.

Further, these systems are likely to persist over the region that will intensify the fog over the northern plains, while East India will continue with dense to very dense fog.

This persistent fog will not let the bright sunshine come out and thus, maximum temperatures will not rise much. In wake of this, North and East India will reel under a cold weather for the next few days, with few places witnessing cold day conditions as well.

Cold day conditions in plains are declared when the day temperatures are below or equal to 16°C.
