Thick fog has finally gripped parts of northern plains as visibility reduced to nil in several places this morning.
Yesterday, many areas in Uttar Pradesh such as Lucknow and Meerut witnessed moderate to dense fog. However, today, the spread in intensity of fog increased. Due to this, areas like Sultanpur, Varanasi, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Agra, Bareilly, Bahraich, Ludhiana and Gwalior observed dense fog with visibility almost reducing to nil.
The reason for this widespread fog can be attributed to the change in wind pattern from northwesterly to easterly-southeasterly which has increased the levels of humidity. Moreover, the wind speed, at present, is also light to very light. Minimum temperatures are also very low at this time.
All these three factors- high humidity, light winds and low minimum temperatures are ideal for the formation of fog over the entire northern plains.
As per weatherman, we can expect fog to gradually clear away during mid afternoon but again it will return during late night and early morning hours.
Foggy conditions are likely to continue for at least next 2 days. Thereafter, the wind direction will once again change to northwesterly and wind speed will also pick up pace.
Thick layer of fog will disappear but few areas will still witness shallow fog and mist.
