As of today, the visibility dropped to 25 meters each in Gorakhpur, Chandigarh, and Amritsar. On the other hand, stations such as Bahraich, Patiala, Kailashahar witnessed the visibility dropping to 200 meters each. As per Skymet Weather, in the wake of the Western Disturbance that is affecting the Western Himalayas, the anti-cyclonic winds are prevailing over the northeastern parts of Rajasthan in the lower levels.
Due to this, northwesterly-northerly winds are affecting East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Moreover, the minimums are also low over these areas, along with high humidity levels. All these factors are conducive to the formation of fog over parts of East Uttar Pradesh and parts of Bihar.
Initially, the fog layer was over North Uttar Pradesh, but as the Western Disturbance is moving eastwards across Tibet region, the fog belt is also shifting in an easterly direction extending towards East and Northeast India. Thus, the states such as East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northeastern parts of Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are blanketed under dense to very dense fog. Further, the same layer of fog is likely to shift towards Assam and Meghalaya.
Skymet Weather further reiterates that this fog layer will continue across the foothills of Uttar Pradesh in districts such as Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Sultanpur, Bahraich, and Devaria for at least another 2-3 days. While, parts of North and Northwest India including Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana will continue with shallow to moderate fog for the next 2 days, with intensity increasing thereafter.
