Almost entire North India is under the influence of dense fog since last three days. Today as well, most of the North Indians woke up to a thick layer of fog.
The dense fog that has engulfed Delhi-NCR along with parts of Punjab and Haryana has led to poor visibility further causing several flights and trains to be delayed or rescheduled. The visibility at the IGI Airport reduced to zero meter from early morning 2:30 till 10 am.
Approximately, 70 north-bound trains along with almost 50 flights at the Indira Gandhi Airport have been affected due to the thick fog layer. On the other hand, 30 trains have been rescheduled due to fog on Friday.
The thick fog also caused several road accidents at various regions. In an incident, shallow fog took three lives injuring six other in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday night. In another incident in Jaipur, four people were killed with two others injured as a bus collided with two cars. Visibility in Lucknow also dropped to 50m from 10:30 pm till 9 am.
The thick fog also engulfed parts of Haryana and Punjab on early Friday morning thereby affecting the rail, road and air traffic in the region. Close to 15 flights at the Sri Guru Ram Das Jee international airport in Amritsar were delayed. The visibility in and around Amritsar was reduced to zero meter from 5:30 am to 9:30 am.
National Capital Regions like Gurugram and Faridabad along with Jhajjar, Hisar, Bhiwani, Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal and Rohtak were blanketed with moderate to dense fog. In fact, dense fog at the border of Haryana and Delhi along with fog in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar districts was observed.
As per Skymet Weather, now, the prevailing easterly winds have changed their directions and dry and humid northwesterly are expected to follow which could lead to thinning of the fog layer. Thus moderate to shallow fog over Delhi and NCR while dense at a few places is likely for another 48 hrs.
