After witnessing a foggy morning on Lohri, Delhiites woke up to a fog free day with light rain on the morning of Makar Sankranti. With the visibility at 800 meters, areas including Vikaspuri, Noida Expressway, Model Town, Dwarka, Palam, Faridabad and Lajpat Nagar observed no fog. Although, light rain was experienced in most parts of the national capital. Due to light rain, the minimum temperatures are expected to rise.
Meanwhile, the visibility dropped down to nil in Lucknow and Varanasi. Patna and Chennai also observed dense fog with visibility at 50 meters and 150 meters, respectively. On the other hand, it was a rainy night in Amritsar with visibility reported to be very good at 1000 meters. Kolkata and Jaipur also observed fair conditions with visibility at 900 meters and 800 meters, respectively.
Allahabad, unlike Delhi and Amritsar observed fog. Despite an extremely cold morning, the devotees in the Sangam city could not keep themselves from taking a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.
Due to dense fog in some parts of the country, rail traffic was hit hard. 111 trains were delayed. Some of the delays include, Sampark Kranti (New Delhi - Bhubaneshwar) delayed by 9 hrs, GT Express (New Delhi - Chennai) by 6 hrs, Nilanchal Express (New Delhi - Puri) by 7 hrs, Sridham Superfast Express (New Delhi - Jabalpur) by 19 hrs, Karnataka Express (New Delhi - Bangalore) by 6 hrs, and Saryu Yamuna Express (Amritsar - Jainagar) which was delayed by 21 hrs.
Air traffic was also badly affected due to dense fog. Overall, 10 flights were delayed, including 7 departures and 3 arrivals. Also, 27 flights were cancelled causing major travel disruption
