After missing the winter chill, Delhi is now witnessing the warmest January in the last five years. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, day temperatures have been settling exceptionally higher than the normal temperatures.
Delhi recorded maximum temperature of 26.5°C on January 5, which is the highest maximum temperature observed since 2011 in January. Almost 15 days in the month have passed with above normal temperature and the profile is likely to be maintained during the next 10 days as well.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, maximums are expected to drop marginally during next two days. However, in absence of any weather activity, maximum temperatures will again rise and settle above normal average of 20.7°C
Since the beginning of January till January 13, the day temperatures have not dropped below 20°C. The average temperatures till first half of the month is 23.8°C.
Northwestern Plains including Delhi have been witnessing abnormally warmer days this winter season. This change can be attributed to the behaviour of the Western Disturbances and winds that are primarily responsible for the cold season in India.
Though frequency of Western Disturbances has been normal but their intensity was on the lower side. Moreover, the path of these weather systems has also been confined to the higher reaches of the Western Himalayas. No system has been able to give first heavy spell of rain and snow over the northern hills.
On the other hand, wind speed has also been on the lighter side, taking away the chill factor from the atmosphere.
