Winter chill has intensified over Delhi-NCR, with maximum temperatures plunging to new lows. Tuesday saw day maximum plunging further to 12.2 degree Celsius, which is the lowest in last 17 years during December. Prior to this, Delhi had recorded lowest maximum temperature at 11.2 degree Celsius on December 31, 2002.
The national capital along with adjoining areas of Noida, Faridabad and Gurugram has been under the grip of cold day conditions. As reiterated, these conditions are declared when day maximums in plains are below 16 degree Celsius.
This is the second consecutive day wherein Delhi-NCR saw maximum temperature hovering around 12 degree Celsius. Monday had already shattered 16 years record when it recorded day maximum at 12.9 degree Celsius, lowest since 2003.
Sunlight remained absolutely absent, restricting the rise in day temperatures. According to Skymet Weather, moderate and chilly northwesterly winds did not let the fog settle on the ground, which remains suspended in the atmosphere. These obscured sky conditions did not allow sun rays reaching the earth surface, leading to further drop in mercury.
What is more concerning is the fact that we do not expect any relief from the ongoing extremely freezing weather for the next 2-3 days as well. According to weathermen, for any improvement we need to see rise in ground temperatures, which is the only way for dissipation of prevailing chilly weather conditions.
A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to effect Jammu and Kashmir around December 18, which would be instrumental in changing the wind pattern and restricting the flow of these unabated chilly winds. However, the approaching system does not seems to be an active one and there is a lot possibility that it may not have any impact on the northwestern plains. Thus, we might not see much relief in the coming days.
Usually such weather conditions are seen during the second half of December. However, December 2019 is on the different track, as temperatures have been dipping ever since the beginning. As per statistics, the ongoing month is already the coldest in last 11 years.
