Delhi weather emerges as major challenge for 'odd-even' success

Delhi odd even formulaThe odd-even formula at work in Delhi has fetched mixed reactions from the general public so far. While some have been endlessly criticizing the government for ‘forcing the formula’ on them, others have remained largely optimistic and opine that cleaning Delhi’s air quality is the responsibility of every Delhiite.

Experts believe that the actual effects of the odd-even formula will only be visible after some time. This is because several factors affect the level of pollution at a particular place and time. An in-depth analysis of all these factors promises a more credible judgement of the odd-even formula. However, such an analysis is only possible after some time.

One of the most impactful factors is weather. Wind, fog, rain, humidity, and fluctuating temperatures can improve or worsen air quality levels in a region. Currently, dense fog prevails over most parts of North India, including Delhi. Fog is known to trap pollutants and escalate pollution levels. Delhiites are familiar with smoggy conditions. These conditions worsen as then intensity of fog increases and pollutants remain suspended in the air for a longer duration.

Intensity of fog over Delhi is expected to rise in the next 24 hours. As a result, pollution levels will also be affected. Also, humidity levels in the city may make matters worse.

Moreover, the driest December in Delhi since 2008 translated into very little to no rain for the national capital in December 2015. Even brief spells of rain can help bring down pollution levels. But the absence of rain prolongs the poor quality of air over a given area. As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, light to moderate rain is likely over Delhi-NCR around January 7 and 8.

In addition to all this, wind conditions are hugely responsible for air pollution levels over a region.  Strong winds sweep away pollutants and help clean the air. Whereas, light winds do very little to alter air quality levels. With only light winds expected over Delhi-NCR region in coming days, this spells more trouble for air pollution in Delhi.

Simply speaking, weather conditions have emerged as a serious challenge for the success of Delhi’s odd-even experiment. With existing weather conditions only worsening air quality levels in the city, road rationing faces a big challenge in its first run in Delhi.
