Delhi is expected to receive the first wave of pre-monsoon weather activity in the month of May. After having dry weather in Delhi nearly over the last 2 weeks, rain and thundershowers preceded by dust storms and squally winds are likely on 06th and 07th May 2021. The fringes of this spell could even extend to 08th May and provide relief over 3 days in a row.

Heatwave conditions had earlier abated from Delhi and the base observatory has recorded day temperature of under 40 degrees for the last 2 consecutive days. This trend will continue and the mercury is likely to plunge in mid 30's (35-36 degrees) around 07th May. Week-long chain of 40degree plus observed between 26th April and 01st May may resume 10th May onward.

Western disturbance is already knocking parts of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh with moderate rain and thunderstorm. As usual, the induced cyclonic circulation lags by a day or two. It is expected to arrive over Haryana and North Rajasthan on 05th May and get into action straightaway. Delhi will have to wait for another day for this system to extend its reach and break the jinx of dry spell possibly lasting 3 days between 06th and 08th May.

Pre-monsoon thunderstorms and dust storms are quite precarious and difficult to gauge their strength and power. They have the potential to unleash varied wind speed over different parts though otherwise proximal to each other. Extra caution needs to be observed to safeguard life and assets. The opening spell always remains most mysterious and therefore treated with a lot of care and concern.
