The month of May started with heatwave conditions at several places in the plains of Northwest India including Delhi. On May 2, the Palam observatory in Delhi recorded 46.2°C as maximum.

Thereafter, temperatures started decreasing and during the last 2 days, most of the places across Northwest India witnessed a drop of 5 to 7 degrees in day temperatures. Scattered rainfall activities, along with dust storm also occurred over these regions. Now, the prevailing Western Disturbance as well as induced cyclonic circulation has moved away and easterly winds are once again being replaced by hot and dry westerly and southwesterly winds.
Saturday’s temperature trend is indicating that maximum temperatures will rise by 2 to 3 degree Celsius and there are chances that gradual rise will continue till May 9 over Delhi-NCR and other parts of Northwest India including Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and West Uttar Pradesh. Delhi could see maximum rise up to 38-39°C.
Another fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach the western Himalayas by May 9 which will once again induce a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana. This will lead to scattered pre-Monsoon activities over Delhi-NCR and other parts of Northwest Plains. We expect these activities to commence during late afternoon or evening hours of May 9 and continue for next two days. At that time, Delhi will once again see a fall in temperatures.
