Winter chill continues to evade the capital city, yet again. The mercury levels have risen across the region and climbed by big margins. The base station at Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 12°C, about 3°C above normal and the highest in the last 10 days. The day temperature has also gone up and touched 28.2°C yesterday, about 3°C above the normal and once again,  highest in the last 10 days.  The temperature may dip marginally over the next 48 hours and is likely to rise again. Now two things: firstly, there is no sharp drop of mercury expected and secondly, slightly warmer mornings may follow around the weekend.

A western disturbance is arriving on 08th Dec 2024 over the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir. Prior to this, a circulation is coming up over parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi on 07th Dec. This feature will get fueled by western disturbance and the duo will become active on 08th & 09th Nov. The mountains of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are likely to have rain and snow during this period. The plains of Punjab and Haryana also may get first winter rains, albeit light and scattered.

The capital city will fall on the peripherals of the system. The chance of rain may be bleak but the sky may turn partly cloudy, restricting the sunshine. The wind pattern will get altered and the dry northwesterly winds will cease to make way for the easterly flow. The temperatures will rise during this period. The weather activity will get over and better weather conditions will prevail on the 09th and 10th Dec. Typical winter fog, thick and dense may surround the city and suburbs during these two days.  The temperatures will dip by 2-3°C.

However, this twist in the weather conditions will be short and sweet. Yet another circulation, somewhat similar to the previous one will come up over the same region. The mercury will again see a hike again and the see-saw between cold and not-so-cold will continue till the middle of the month. A sharp chill for the national capital is unlikely in the first fortnight of December.
