After staying above normal for nearly two weeks, Delhi's temperature has plunged to under 5°C. The base station at Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8°C, about 2°C below the normal. The capital city last recorded the lowest of 5°C nearly three weeks back, on 19th Dec 2024. Mercury has generally clocked above normal, since then. Such low temperatures may last only for 24 hours and further falls will get arrested. Rain and thundershowers are likely on the weekend, to be precise on Saturday, 11th January 2025.
Delhi has consistently recorded a minimum of under 5°C in January, since 2011. The year 2010 made an exception of registering the lowest of 5.6°C on 06th Jan 2010. The capital city has gone on record to clock the lowest ever temperature of -0.6°C, way back on 16th Jan 1935. Since 2009, the city has recorded the lowest of 1.1°C on 01stJan 2021. Unlike in December, the lowest temperature for the month of January is invariably recorded during the first half of the month. Today’s temperature of 4.8°C is the lowest so far in January, this year.
There is a western disturbance approaching as an upper air trough between 10th and 12th January 2025. The secondary system as induced circulation is likely to come up over the plains. Moist winds are likely to be ingested from the Arabian Sea, accelerating the weather system. This will trigger scattered rain and thundershowers in the Delhi/NCR, more dominantly on 11th Jan 2025. The change in the wind pattern and presence of a cloudy sky will arrest further fall of minimum temperatures. Actually, the mercury is expected to rise to double digits on the weekend. Following the passage of the weather system, the temperatures will drop once again, at the start of the next week. Dense fog may also return back impacting rail, road and air traffic.
