With the winters having marked their onset over the northern plains of the country including the national capital and adjoining areas, temperatures have also started plummeting speedily.
Dense fog has engulfed most parts of the country particularly the north Indian states and people residing in the northern regions have been waking up to thick fog layers almost each day since the beginning of December.
Fog has been enveloping the northern region of the country particularly during the early morning and late evening hours.
Earlier, light winds from the east and southeast and dense fog together led the temperatures hovering between 9°C and 10°C. However, in last 24 hours, winds have changed their direction and have started flowing from the northwest.
In the wake of this, minimum temperatures over most parts of the region are dropping at a fast pace. In last 24 hours, people in Delhi shivered in 7.7°C which is the lowest minimum the capital of the country has observed since the beginning of this season.
Thereafter, due to a Western Disturbance and an induced cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and Rajasthan, minimums are once again expected to scale up by 2-3 degrees in next 2-3 days.
The sharp drop in temperatures are expected after December 13 and it is during that time, temperatures may go down from 6-7 degrees setting up for severe winters.
