January 8, 2015 6:54 PM |

Temperatures in Delhi have plummeted to new lows, bringing normal life to a halt. People across the city were seen covered with layers of woolens and comforting themselves with hot tea and bonfire.

With the biting cold conditions prevailing over the city, most of us would end up saying 'Oh this year is colder than the last one' or hear some of the frequent phrases such as 'Aaj to bahut thand hai'.

“It is really cold this year. I have been living in Delhi for last four years but this time it's really bad,” said Mahendra Sharma, a cook.

But do you feel that this is something unusual happening in the national capital this year? Actually no, the present weather conditions are perfectly normal.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, first three weeks of January are supposed to witness extreme cold conditions, in terms of cold wave, cold days and fog. The maximum temperatures in the city have been settling seven degrees below normal around 14°C, while minimum temperatures are settling around the normal average of 7°C.

Although night temperature is in single digit but it is the low day temperatures along with inconspicuous sunshine, which makes us feel more cold. Such cold spells are witnessed every year but frequency of these spells keep varying from year to year.

As per the latest forecast, maximum temperatures will continue to hover below normal for some more days till the time any fresh Western Disturbance affects North India.
