Delhi Records Second Lowest Minimum Temperature Of March In The Last Ten Years

March 5, 2024 1:14 PM |

In the aftermath of the heaviest snowfall of the season in the mountains of North India, the night temperatures have plunged across the plains.  The ripple effect has travelled to the national capital, as well. Base observatory Safdarjung recorded a minimum of 9°C, about 4°C below the normal. Complete Delhi/ NCR had similar reads of minimum temperature, with the meteorological office at Lodhi Road, clocking 8.4°C. Some other observatories were still lower the most prominent being Jafarpur 7.6°C (-5), Ayanagar 8.1 (-5) and Narela 8.2°C (-5).

As per the five days normal (pentad) records, Delhi has an average of 13°C, to start with, in the first week of the month and gains about 3°C, to end the month at 16°C. The day temperature gets a large jump, starting at about 27°C and finishing at 34°C, at the fag end of the month. The minimum and maximum temperatures, both, are racing below the normal by a clear margin of 3°-5°C.

The minimum temperature of 9°C, today morning, is the lowest in the last 5 years, since 2019. A similar temperature of 9°C was also recorded on 13 Mar 2017. The lowest minimum temperature of 6.8°C is on record for the last 10 years, measured on 01st Mar 2019.

A western disturbance is moving across the hills of North India. No rains are expected in the plains. A layer of thin clouds may move in during the later half of the day and tomorrow, as well. Incremental rise in the minimum temperatures is likely. However, mercury may not rise beyond 10°C  till Friday. Over the weekend, these are likely to step up to low teens. A Significant rise will happen next week, both in the day and night temperatures. Light rains may show up once again, around midweek.
