National capital is not getting any respite. The minimum temperature continues to plunge. The record observatory at Safdarjung has measured the lowest temperature of the season, today morning. Mercury dropped to a new low of 3.3°C, about 4°C below the normal. The meteorological office at Lodhi Road, celebrating today's 150 years of service to the nation, was a shade lower than this at 3.1°C. This is the fourth day in succession when the minimum temperature has dipped below 4°C. Such mercury levels amount to persistent cold wave conditions for Delhi and its suburbs.
Also, things got worse with dense to very dense fog envelopes surrounding the entire region. A mild breeze adds further bite and feels like the temperature slump to about 1-2°C. The inversion layer close to the ground has been prolonging the poor visibility condition, till midday. Visibility seems to have become better today, as the layer of fog lifted early, apparently due to the churning effect of the breeze. With the sunshine peeping early in the day, the maximum temperature is expected to go past 20°C, comfortably.
Foggy and cold-wave conditions are likely to prevail during the week. Feeble western disturbance is arriving tomorrow over the northern mountains and another one will follow on the weekend. There could be a marginal rise in the minimum temperature tomorrow due to wind change. However, the change will not last very long and conditions are expected to revert back, yet again. No rains are expected anytime soon and dry cold will prevail during the entire week. A thin sheet of cloud is likely during the evening and tomorrow. This also will get clear later and remain so for the rest of the week.
