Delhi Records Lowest Temperature Of This Season, Further Drop Likely

Delhi's Safdarjung recorded lowest temperature of this season so far. The minimum temperature dipped to 8.4°C, about 1°C below the normal. Meteorological office at Lodhi Road was the lowest in the region at 8.3°C.  The airport observatory at Palam remained in double digit and registered 10.9°C, again the lowest of this season.  Earlier, the official record observatory for Delhi had recorded a lowest of 9.2°C on 24thNov2021.

As per the pentad normal, the national capital starts with a normal minimum of 10°C in December. It drops to about 8°C by the middle of month and finishes with 7°C in the last week. Mean monthly normal of minimum temperature for December stands at 8.3°C.

December 2019 remains the 2nd coldest since 1901 with a mean maximum temperature of 19.15° against the normal of 23.1°C.  Also, 30th Dec 2019 remains the coldest day of December since 1901, when it recorded a daily maximum of 9.4°C. Incidentally, December 2019 also holds the record of punching coldest minimum temperature of   2.4°C, on 28thDec, again the lowest on record since 2006. Last year, the lowest minimum temperature was 3.3°C, recorded on 31st December.

There is no active western disturbance expected for the next one week. A weak system is likely to arrive around 14thDec affecting Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh for about 48hr.  In the absence of any significant weather feature, dry and cold winds are expected to blow across plains of North India , also covering the national capital. 

Night temperatures are likely to drop further by 1-2°C during the next 4-5days.  Misty morning with shallow fog in patches and mild breeze is expected for the next one week. No rainfall is predicted for Delhi during this period.
