Delhi Records Lowest Temperature Of Season, Steps Up Cold Wave

National capital Delhi recorded the lowest temperature of this season, so far. Official observatory at Safdarjung, registered a new low of 3.2°C today morning. Breaching 4°C as such amount to cold wave conditions but the mercury plunging 5°C below the normal mark, reinforces severity of cold wave conditions. Meteorological office at Lodhi Road measured minimum temperature of 3.1°C and Jafarpur was the lowest in the region with 2.9°C, 6°C below the average.

This year, the minimum temperature of Delhi has already  surpassed previous year record of 3.3°C on 31Dec2020.  On earlier occasions, minimum temperature of less than 3°C was recorded on 5 occasions since 2007, the lowest being 2.4°C in 2013 & 2019. The temperature may not plummet further and is actually slated to rise after about 48hr. However, cold wave conditions may continue for the next 2 days and abate thereafter.

Western disturbance is approaching  on 22nd Dec and will largely affect weather of hilly region of North India.  In the plains, winds in the lower levels may start changing and some medium and high clouds will also appear along with. No rain is expected to accompany during this period.

Close on heels, another western disturbance is likely on 24thDecember. Induced cyclonic circulations over the plains will increase its area of influence. Capital city will also observe partly cloudy sky between 25th and 27th Dec. Also, chances of few showers lashing some parts of the city during this period and possibly get extended further till 29thDec.

Cold wave conditions are likely to abate from 23rd onward. However, persistent clouding may dip day temperature and wind change over may increase the obscurity with thick mist and shallow fog in patches.
