Delhi records lowest minimum of season, relief from pollution to continue

Delhi winters have marked their arrival with a bang. Those summery clothes have been kept inside the closet and sweaters and jackets have finally been taken out. So much so that the minimum temperature witnesses a drop each day.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperatures remain on the higher side with the day remaining on the comfortable night. However, as the night progresses, temperatures continue to take a dip. In fact, today, both the observatories of Delhi recorded their minimum below the 10-degree mark.

The Palam observatory witnessed a minimum of 9.3 degrees while the Safdarjung observatory saw its minimum temperature settling at a mere 9.4 degrees. However, the maximums in both these areas settled in the mid-20s.

The reason for such a drop in these minimums is attributed to the inflow of cold and dry northwesterly winds over the region which have been blowing from the snow-clad mountains of the Himalayas. These weather conditions will prevail in Delhi for this week at least.

Take a look at the pollution levels across Delhi and the NCR region

As far as the pollution levels are concerned, they will continue to remain on the lower side as these winds are moderate in nature. Thus, pollutants are not being able to settle in the lower atmospheric levels.

Until November 27, low pollution levels as well as increase in wintry chill during the night hours will prevail over Delhi and the NCR region. However, around November 28, another Western Disturbance is approaching the Himalayas. Due to this, winds will start to change direction and reduce in speed.

Thus, not only will the temperatures increase during that time, but wind speed is expected to go down and during that time minimums will rise by one or two degrees. Pollution levels will also increase during that time due to light winds.
