Delhi records lowest minimum in ten years

December 30, 2013 2:30 PM |

Delhiites woke up to a freezing Monday morning as the weather in Delhi turned the coldest in ten years with Safdargunj station recording 2.4⁰C as the minimum temperature. The weather in Delhi today was colder than that of 2011 when the minimum temperature was recorded at 2.9⁰C on 25th December. Delhi’s all time low of 1.1⁰C was recorded on 26th December, 1945.

“Heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir coupled with icy northerly winds from the hills has led to a significant drop in temperatures in the plains of North and Northwest India. It is this persistent flow of cold winds that caused the mercury to drop to sub-zero levels in many parts”, says Mahesh Palawat, meteorologist at skymetweather.com

Some of the cities that recorded freezing temperatures on Monday morning are: Amritsar (-0.8⁰C), Hisar (-0.1⁰C), Narnaul (-0.5⁰C), Bhiwani (-0.8⁰C), Sonipat (0⁰C), Churu (-0.1⁰C), Ludhiana (1⁰C), Agra (2.5⁰C) and Ganganagar (2.5⁰C).

New records for the winter season have been set before we head into the New Year 2014. While Delhi recorded the lowest minimum of 2.4⁰C in 10 years, Hissar recorded the coldest morning minimum at -0.8⁰C in 40 years on 29th December 2013.

“As of now our weather models are indicating that the weather in Delhi in January will be even colder than that in December. Minimums could drop to 2⁰C and below with widespread frost expected in various parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh”, added Mahesh Palawat.
