National capital recorded the lowest maximum temperature of this winter so far. Base station at Safdarjung  measured highest mercury level at 15.7°C, about 4°C below the normal. There was a sharp drop of 7.5°C from the previous day’s maximum of 23.2°C.  Minimum temperature in the morning was 10.9°C, about 4°C higher than the average. The capital city narrowly missed recording a ‘cold day’ which stipulates the minimum to be below 10°C and the maximum at least 4.4°C below the normal. However, conditions are building up to witness cold day, probably by end of this week.

Under the influence of a western disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation, base observatory recorded rainfall of 9mm, ending 8.30am today morning. Better weather conditions are expected today with light and passing showers in some areas. Another active western disturbance will arrive tomorrow along with its secondary circulation over the plains of North India. For national capital, the sky is likely to turn cloudy to overcast late in the evening or night.

Fresh spell of rain and thundershower, more intense than the previous one is likely to commence on 07thJan evening, very light to begin with. Intermittent moderate rain is expected over Delhi/NCR, the next morning, on 08thJan. Sky is likely to open up, almost throughout the day, possibly with one or two heavy drops in between. There could be a hailstorm in some area, the same evening and night. The spill over effect could also be witnessed the next morning, on 09thJan and improve thereafter, in the night.

Persistent cloud cover and rainy day, aided by hailstorm may trigger cold day conditions. Minimum temperature will remain above normal, possibly in double digit and is likely to drop only after 09thJan.  The capital city is expected to overshoot its monthly quota of 19.3mm during this period. This will be the 4th time in a row that Delhi exceeds its normal rainfall of January.
