Delhi has recorded the last 5 straight days of heat waves, between the 26th and 30th of May 2024. Mercury remained above 45°C during this period. Also, the highest temperature of this season and the record high of the last 79 years, at 46.8°C was registered on 27th May 2024. The capital city has recorded the longest spell of 40°C and above in the last one decade or even more. The base observatory at Safdarjung has recorded temperatures in excess of 40°C between 13th and 30th May 2024. Today, the temperature has already crossed 40°C at 10.30 a.m. and is likely to shoot up to 45°C or more in the late afternoon. Accordingly, Delhi will have the distinction of witnessing the longest spell of 40°C and above in the month of May 2024.
A fresh western disturbance has arrived over the mountains. Also, an induced cyclonic circulation has formed over North Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan region. This feature will move eastward and position over North Rajasthan and adjoining parts of Punjab and Haryana. An east-west trough will run from this system in close proximity of Delhi.
The accumulated heat and this trough together will trigger pre-monsoon showers between 31st May and 04th June 2024. A spell of thunderstorm or dust storm, accompanied by strong winds is quite likely. Most of the weather activity will happen in the late hours of the day. And therefore, the temperatures will continue to soar above 40 degrees, despite the weather activity. A marginal drop in the temperatures is expected on the weekend. However, the heat wave conditions will build up again, mid week next and later.
