The national capital recorded the highest maximum temperature of this season, yesterday. The base observatory at Safdarjung recorded a day high of 34.6°C, about 3°C above the normal. Earlier, the capital city had recorded the highest of 34.1°C on 23rd March. More often than not, the city touches or crosses the 35°C mark by this time of the month. Very unusually, this was not the case this season and the flavour of pre-monsoon heat remained obliviously missing. However, the stint of rise in mercury is becoming evident and it may breach the mark today.
A western disturbance has arrived over the Western Himalayas and another one will follow soon. The two systems, nearly overlapping each other, will act in tandem to keep the weather activity kicking over the mountains. As it happens many a time, a cyclonic circulation is coming up over parts of North Rajasthan and border areas. An east-west trough will run from this feature in close proximity to Delhi. Under the combined influence of western disturbance and cyclonic circulation, pre-monsoon activity will pick up over the plains of North India. Delhi will remain on the far-end peripherals of the duo but still remain vulnerable to the remnant effects. Sporadic rain and showers are quite likely for the capital city and suburbs, over the next 4 days, till 31st March.
No strong weather activity is expected, but the jinx of the dry spell will break to register stray showers, albeit for a short duration. The intensity and spread of weather will be higher on 29th and 30th March. Gusts of wind, peals of thunder and flash of lightning may be observed, a little more frequent on these two days. Rain and showers in the vicinity of the capital city will mitigate the rising heat and the maximum will again get back to 33°C-34°C, close to the weekend. The minimum temperature, which is nearing the 20°C mark, for the first time this season, will slide back to the high teens, once again. Most of the weather activity will be in the late afternoon and evening hours. Broad clearance can be expected from 01st April onward.
