Delhi recorded the highest temperature of this year and also, of this season, yesterday. The base observatory Safdarjung scaled a new high of 42°C, about 4°C above normal. Some other stations like Jafarpur, Najafgarh and Narela breached 43°C. Earlier, Safdarjung had recorded a high of 41.1°C on 05th May. Likely arrival of a western disturbance, inducing a slight change in the wind pattern and the prevailing strong surface winds will arrest any further rise over the next few days. However, the mercury will continue to hover around 40-41°C, during this week.
The arrival of a fresh western disturbance tomorrow will induce cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan and Punjab. An inclined trough will extend from this circulation, running across Haryana, Delhi and Southwest Uttar Pradesh. The accumulated heat and proximity of the trough will increase the chances of pre-monsoon activity over Delhi and its suburbs during later this week.
Delhi/NCR will have hot and strong surface winds over the next two days, followed by a twist in weather conditions. Rain and thunderstorm activity is expected between 10th and 13th May 2024. A spell of dust storm, accompanied with strong surface winds, kicking up dust and reducing visibility is likely during this period. Lightening strikes peals of thunder and brief duration sharp showers are likely. Most of the weather activity will occur in the evening and night. Break in the forenoon hours, with a fair amount of sunshine will still raise the temperature to high 30’s and may even reach 40°C. On cessation of this activity on 14th May and later, a sharp rise in the mercury level is expected.
