Delhi has been witnessing Seesaw temperatures for the last 2-3 days. Minimum temperature on January 5 was 3 degree it increased to 4 degrees on January 6th. Dropped again to 2.2 degree today on January 7, which is the lowest not only this season but also the lowest minimum in January since 2014.
However, temperatures of Gujarat and southern districts of Rajasthan have increased by 2 to 4 degrees leading to abatement of cold wave. In fact, an anticyclone has formed over Gujarat due to this south westerly and westerly winds are blowing over Gujarat and South Rajasthan. Winds are still northerly Over Eastern parts of Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
There may be gradual increase in minimum over above-mentioned states from January 8. Relief from pinching cold can be anticipated by January 10. We think minimum of Delhi may increase to 7 and 8 degrees by January 11 or 12. Two successive western disturbances will give moderate to heavy snowfall over the Western Himalayas until then flow of Icy cold winds from North will be restricted.
Temperatures are expected to head south once again from January 14 leading to cold wave conditions over North India including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and North Rajasthan from January 15.
