Delhi has topped the list in being the world’s most polluted city as air quality deteriorated to the worst levels on Friday evening.

On Friday, the overall AQI was recorded at 527, while on Saturday morning it was close to 500.

The air quality index majors the concentration of the pollutants in the air. For the last one week, the Particulate Matter for the Delhi region has been 2.5.

Just like Friday, Saturday too began on a severely polluted note. However, high wind speed during the later parts of the day helped to improve the pollution levels. As a result, other cities such as Tashkent, Lahore, Hangzhou, Chongqing overtook Delhi on the world’s polluted city index on Saturday.

The temperatures dropped during the evening hours and as a result, AQI increased, making Delhi reach the third spot (198) with Lahore (208) and Tashkent (262) topping the list.

GRAP came into play in Delhi on October 15 this year. Each year the same plan is implemented as the pollution seems to widen its grip. Instead of early implementation of GRAP this year, pollution rose to a 3 year high early this November.

In Delhi, the GRAP was rolled out when AQI was already beyond 300 for days. Air emergency was kicked in when it was beyond 400.
