As expected, rain and thundershowers have started lashing several parts of Delhi NCR, particularly southern parts of the state. Palam Observatory and nearby areas of Dwarka, Mahipalpur and Vasant Kunj have already recorded a rainy spell.

At present, intense clouding can be seen across the national capital aclong with adjoining areas of Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida. According to weathermen, rains and thundershowers can begin anytime over the other areas of the city. Chances are bright that city might see some instances of hailstorm as well.

A dense patch of cloud is seen moving across the city, due to which these patchy rains would continue for next 2-3 hours. Thus slowly and gradually most parts of Delhi-NCR would be covered by rains. In wake of this, mercury has already taken a dip and is presently hovering around 18˚C.

Thunderclouds would again gather energy during late night hours and we can expect another spell by the wee hours or early Tuesday morning. This would be the first widespread spell of winter rains.

Updated on January 21, 10:30 am:  Delhi rains to commence today evening; maximums to drop further

Since the last many days, Delhi  has been experiencing near normal temperatures with maximums settling around 20˚C and minimums around 7˚C. However, since the last two days, both day and night temperatures in Delhi-NCR region observed a significant rise. In fact, yesterday, Delhi’s Safdarjung Observatory recorded its maximum temperature at 28.7˚C, which was 7˚ degrees above normal. Moreover, it was the highest maximum temperature recorded for the city in last 10 years. Similarly, even Palam Observatory recorded its day temperature at 28.5˚C, followed by Aya Nagar 29.0˚C, Delhi University 27.9˚C and Ridge 28.0˚C. The day temperatures over all these areas were above normal.

Now in wake of the active Western Disturbance over the Northern Hills and its induced cyclonic circulation over the Northwestern Plains, day temperatures over Delhi-NCR region will drop marginally. Meanwhile, the night temperatures will not change much and continue to remain above normal.

Moreover, due to the above-mentioned weather systems, clouding over the capital city will increase and as clouds will become dense, rain and thundershower activities will commence over Delhi and its adjoining region of Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad by today evening.

Thus, in the coming three to four days starting from today, light to moderate rain and thundershower activities are likely to affect the Delhi-NCR region. Along with this, hailstorm activity over isolated parts of the city cannot be ruled out. Meanwhile, due to the occurrence of rains, fog will not make appearance.
