Winter rains in February generally occur due to strong Western Disturbances and induced cyclonic circulations which develop over Haryana and adjoining areas.
At present, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over Haryana and adjoining Delhi-NCR but the intensity of rain will be light to very light.
Patchy light rain occurred at many parts on Saturday morning and continued till late afternoon hours. Thereafter, the weather cleared up.
Another Western Disturbance is expected on February 16 and 17. At the same time, a wind confluence zone is expected to intensify over Central India. Due to these two weather systems, Delhi may once again receive light rain but heavy showers are ruled out.
February rains in Delhi
After a dry January in Delhi-NCR, the month of February also followed suit. Till now very light rainfall has occurred over Delhi and other parts of the national capital region.
The frequency of active Western Disturbances has definitely increased in February. These have also given good amounts of snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. But, the induced cyclonic circulations did not bring much rainfall over the plains of Northwest India.
The Safdarjung Observatory recorded just 0.2 mm of rainfall till February 12, against the monthly average of 22.1 mm. Palam also received a mere 0.1 mm against the average of 20 mm.
In fact, we do not foresee any good weather system which could bring moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers in February anymore. Therefore, we can say that Delhi will receive deficient rainfall this month.
