Delhi is catching up with the normal rainfall of July. Though it has not rained significantly for the last three days, moderate monsoon showers between the 22nd and 26th of July, as recorded at base observatory Safdarjung have taken it closer to the monthly target. Albeit, these showers were patchy and intermittent, still over 100mm of rainfall was added during this period. The base station Safdarjung has recorded a total of 203.2mm against the normal of 209.7mm, between 01st and 29th July 2024. Moderate to heavy showers are expected over the next few days this week.
The monsoon trough has been running south of its normal position, keeping Delhi far to its left. Resultantly, the winds are humid easterlies in the lower levels but not favourable for any measurable rains today. Under the influence of a weather system over the North Pakistan region, the trough is shifting northward, coming closer to Delhi, but still maintaining an arm's distance, till tomorrow. So, today and tomorrow, the capital city will not observe significant rains and only a sprinkle, here and there and more of this tomorrow.
Courtesy, cyclonic circulation forming over the North Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal on 30th July, the monsoon trough will get realigned along Indo-Gangetic plains. The cyclonic circulation will get more organized on 31st July and shift inland, the next day. Monsoon will become active all along the stretch of the trough, from North Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi on the western end to West Bengal on the eastern side, across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
Monsoon trough will run, through and through Delhi on 31st July and keep close proximity for the next two days, as well. Heavy showers are likely for Delhi and suburbs on 31st July. Moderate and intermittent rains will continue on the 01st and 02ndAug. The trough will shift south of its normal position on 03rd and 04th Aug and the weather activity will become light. The oscillation and northward drift of the trough, once again will rejuvenate the weather activity between 05th and 07th Aug 2024. It means that July will end on a rainy note and August will make a wet start for the national capital.
