Delhi rains fail to curtail air pollution as AQI still in poor zone

Delhi has seen the wettest spell of this winters from January 21 to the forenoon hours of January 22. These showers had helped in paving off the bad air quality which earlier affected the residents of the city. On January 23, the pollution levels were in the range of satisfactory to moderate levels.

However, the relief seemed to be a very short one and today, once again the PM 2.5 levels have risen and is now in poor to very poor category. AQI (Air Quality Index) for Delhi on January 23 was recorded 212 that falls in 'poor' category.

According to Skymet Weather, the winds have changed their direction to easterly and are very light and calm in nature. Not only this, the humidity levels have also gone up. This had led to formation of shallow fog and mist during morning hours and such a situation is expected to continue for coming 24 hours. At present, due to localized weather conditions, isolated pockets of Delhi and neighboring areas might witness thundershowers in the coming 4-5 hours.

Not only this, Delhi is in the vicinity of the trough over Madhya Pradesh, thus there are bleak chances of of isolated rain and thunderstorm activities during early morning hours of January 25 as well. But since the rain activity would be  isolated one, the pollution levels would not see a change and might hover in poor to very poor zone.

Around January 26, i.e. on Republic Day, the northwesterly dry and cold winds would once again blow over the city and might also pick up pace which would help in clearing the pollution levels. Then, the levels can oscillate between moderate and poor zone.
