Delhi weather had been wreaking havoc over the residents. So much so that a day before the maximum temperature in one of the observatories of the national capital settled over 40 degrees. In fact, the city was observing heatwave conditions.

However, rain gods decided to give Delhiites a break from the scorching summer heat. Last night was a rainy affair for almost the entire city. In fact, the NCR region including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad also witnessed rain and thundershowers.

Frequent lightning strikes were also seen lighting up the midnight sky. Thunder and lightning were an all-night affair keeping half the city wide awake for quite some time.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded a whopping 24.6 mm of rainfall. With these figures not only has Delhi surpasses its monthly normal in one sitting but also this is the highest 24-hour rainfall amount in the last decade. The last time the city received such rains were on April 5, 2008 when 22 mm rainfall was recorded.

Palam observatory also witnessed good rains at 14.2 mm. Other parts of the city also witnessed good rains last night.

A Western Disturbance over the Jammu and Kashmir region and adjoining areas had induced a circulation over Central Pakistan and adjoining Haryana. Not only this, a trough is also extending from this system across Delhi which has given rains over the region.

Now, weather conditions have changed and the sun has come up over many areas. However, cloud cover will once again make a comeback in the next few hours.

Not only this, parts of the national capital are expected to witness rain and thundershower activity today as well. Lightning and thunderstorms may also occur over the region. Thus, this spell of Pre-monsoon rains will bring a smile on the face of Delhiites today as well.

These weather conditions will result in getting rid of the intense summer heat the city has been observing.
