Delhi and the NCR region had remained dry for quite some time now. However, a couple of days ago, isolated pockets of Delhi and the NCR region saw light rainfall, in the wake of which, controlled pollution levels were seen with the air quality below the 200 mark in several parts and even satisfactory in many areas.
However, today, things just worsened, and pollution levels had reached hazardous levels. In fact, the passage of Western Disturbance resulted in increased humidity and reversal of winds causing increased pollution levels, PM 2.5 was 20 times the safe level. Moreover, PM 2.5 can even penetrate into people’s lungs.
Due to this, there have been restrictions in construction work including excavation, banning of hot mixing plants along with several more restriction on sale and bursting of firecrackers on Diwali.
In view of the festive fever, the number of vehicles on the road will contribute to more pollution adding on to the worsened air quality. Thus, particles will continue to stay resulting in no respite from increasing pollution levels.
For the dispersion of these particles, strong winds, rainfall and low humidity along with sunshine are required, however, none of that are currently available. Thus, as Diwali comes along and the festive fever results in firecrackers and other additives, Delhiites will only choke further.
