Delhi pollution is back again and that too to stay for a long time now. Air quality has been deteriorating day by day and did plunge to a lower level yesterday. The Air Quality Index spiked to 393 in Jahangirpuri, today.
Delhi’s air quality that at present is in the severe zone for several places including Mundka at 322, and Pusa at 358 at 1 pm today.
Persistent stubble burning in Haryana and Punjab and local polluting factors have already wreaked havoc, and now the weather conditions have also started to contribute in the increasing pollution levels. This NASA image behind shows the extent of stubble burning over a period of last ten days.
Light winds are blowing over the region with a reduction in temperatures, moisture has also increased in the on account of back to back Western Disturbance. All these factors would not let the pollutants move away easily.
Residents have been advised not to venture out for jogs and run in the first ten days of November as toxic fumes from the stubble-burning regions of Punjab and Haryana could gush in because of a change in wind direction.
Elderly, children and people with cardiac and pulmonary diseases are advised to stay indoors and outdoor activity should remain limited. In fact, residents have also been asked to keep their windows shut and wear masks.
As Diwali nears, the bursting of firecrackers is expected to make the Delhi air quality deteriorate to hazardous levels in the coming days.
