Delhi pollution to improve as winds pick up pace

Delhi has been experiencing clear weather conditions, since December 13 as moderate winds from northwest were blowing over entire northwestern plains including Delhi and adjoining region between December 13 and 19.

These winds did not allow fog to form and pollution to accumulate over the city. However, around December 20, the winds changed direction and became very light. The winds were blowing from southwest direction and led to an increase in the humidity levels.

These weather phenomena resulted in the formation of moderate to dense fog. With the formation of fog, smoke and dust particles along with other pollutants started accumulating in the lower atmosphere. The condensed water vapour in fog helped these pollutants to linger near the earth’s surface for a longer duration.

In the absence of winds, these pollutants mixed with fog and formed a layer of smog above Delhi. Due to this smog, air quality index of Delhi became severe on December 21. As predicted by Skymet Weather, the Western Disturbance has moved away, leading to the normal flow of dry and cool northwesterly winds.

The wind speed is also increasing gradually, which is evident by seeing the decreased pollution and the intensity of smog. We expect the weather to further improve by tomorrow, pollution levels would reduce and the visibility will also improve. The cold winds will also reduce the minimum temperatures by 2°C-3°C in the coming days.
