Yesterday, pollution took a leap in Delhi with the air quality reaching the worst of the season. On Thursday, the Air Quality Index in Delhi plunged to 311, which falls in ‘very poor’ category.
Data showed Delhi’s average PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels three times the safe standards of 60 and 100 micrograms per cubic meter respectively. The average PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels at 7pm were 154.8 and 317.5 micrograms per cubic meter respectively.
The situation paves no way for any improvement in the current air quality. Wind speed continues to play a major role as pollutants remain suspended close to the earth's surface while wind speed is not enough to blow off such particles.
According to the collected data, the share of external biomass burning in Delhi’s PM2.5 was 7% on Thursday, and it is expected to go down to 3% on Friday. Also, as a relief, the situation on Diwali may not be as bad as last year.
Mainly clear sky is expected to prevail over Delhi today, with mist and smoke in the morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 31 and 17 degrees Celsius respectively.
Delhi’s weather is expected to remain dry for the next few days as no major system is likely to affect the region anytime soon.
