Before and after Diwali, the pollution levels in Delhi-NCR have dropped from very poor to severe and hazardous category. The concerned authorities have taken all the actions to curb pollution, but they did not find any success.

Passage of successive Western Disturbances are not allowing steady flow of northwesterly winds to set in. Since the winds are light and variable in nature with no definite direction, pollution of Delhi is increasing day by day as the local pollutants are behaving as a catalyst to the existing pollution.

We can expect similar weather conditions to continue for coming 2-3 days. However, isolated light rains over Delhi-NCR is possible on November 13-14. But the rain intensity will be not be much which could help in washing away pollution.

In order to get relief from pollution, moderate to heavy showers with longer duration are needed. However, we don’t see any major weather activity to take place anytime soon which could help in bringing rains over Delhi-NCR. Play of strong winds is another factor which can help in diluting the pollution as the winds will carry away pollution and spread it to wider areas leading to a marginal relief. We can say that the strength of winds should be moderate to strong moving in a definite direction, only then it will help in relieving from the existing pollution.

As per Skymet, winds are expected to commence from Northwest direction with increased speed from November 16. Till then, we Delhiites will continue battling the fight with pollution. However, we can expect gradual improvement November 16 onwards.

This time the flow of northwesterly winds was not seen for a longer duration which would have carried the smoke from stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana to Delhi-NCR. Haryana Chief Secretary DS Dhesi on Sunday said that it was unfair to blame farmers for Delhi’s poor air quality. The farm waste this year has been just 1% of the total area sown with paddy.
