Delhi pollution in poor category again, respite after Feb 13

Delhi rains and intense hailstorm activities on February 7 improved pollution levels to a great extent over the national capital and its adjoining areas. In fact, for three consecutive days i.e. February 8, 9 and 10, Air Quality Index (AQI) over Delhi-NCR was under ‘moderate to satisfactory’ category. Moreover, Delhiites were finally happy to get clean air after battling hazardous pollution levels for quite a long time. This major improvement in air quality was due to rainfall activities and the presence of high speed winds over the region.

However, since last night, a major change has been noticed in the air quality. The winds over Delhi and adjoining areas of Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad have once again become light. Moreover, some parts of the region even experienced shallow fog yesterday. All these conditions are favourable for dropping the air quality and therefore, have significantly resulted in increasing the level of pollution once again. As a result, major areas of Delhi have been recording pollution under ‘poor to very poor’ category since last night.

Talking about Air Quality Index, AQI over Delhi University has been recorded at 317, falling under ‘very poor’ category, followed by Chandni Chowk at 317, IGI Airport at 313, Mathura road at 307 and Pitampura at 304.

Forecast

According to Skymet weather, pollution is expected to increase until February 13. Thereafter, a new weather system is expected to approach the Western Himalayas which would bring rains over Delhi and NCR February 14 onward. These rains would prove fruitful in washing away the persisting pollutants and the AQI is expected to come under ‘moderate to satisfactory’ category again over most parts of Delhi and the NCR region.
