Delhi Pollution: Environment Minister calls for pollution free crackers

In sustenance of the Supreme Court (SC) managing in its ban on fireworks sale this Diwali, Union Environment Minister, Harsh Vardhan, on Sunday announced that the researchers have been asked to create eco-friendly, contamination free firecrackers.

This has got support by a plenty of Indians, the same has been criticized by some who feel it's an affront to Hindu custom. In fact, a week ago, the Environment Minister was hammered on Twitter for tweeting in the help of the SC ban.

In view of the rising pollution levels across Delhi and NCR that has now become a major concern for the State Government, the Supreme Court on October 9 has put a stay on the sale of firecrackers across Delhi and its adjoining boundaries until October 31.

Flagging off the ‘Run for Clean Air’ campaign in Delhi as a part of the ‘Clean Air Campaign’ Dr. Harsh Vardhan and the Minister of State, Mahesh Sharma quoted that “Swacchata” (cleanliness) must be a collective endeavor. “The legacy that we leave behind in terms of clean air is very important,” he said.

However, it is not only the firecrackers that are to be blamed for deteriorating Delhi’s air. One of the major chunks of smoky air comes from the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana wherein, the stubble burning is being practiced majorly.

Additionally, the pollution particles emitted from vehicles is another cause of the toxic air prevailing in Delhi and NCR.
