Delhi Pollution: Bleak chances of improvement; levels remain in very poor to poor zone

The pollution levels are still very grim over Delhi and NCR. Although, there is a marginal improvement in air quality but most of the places still have pollution levels falling in the category of ‘very poor’ to ‘poor’.

On Thursday, severe pollution levels were observed over many places but now the number has reduced. Since morning, north-westerlies are blowing. These dry winds were blowing at a speed of 10-12 kmph during morning hours. As per Skymet, these winds have picked up pace during afternoon hours. The wind speed is once again expected to decrease by late evening hours.

It has been observed that winds become calm and light during night, moreover temperatures also start to drop by night. Such weather conditions help in formation of mist, haze and shallow fog which is generally evident during early morning hours. The pollutants then get mixed with these and make a layer of smog. Smog can be witnessed during morning hours and that is the time when the pollution levels are also at its peak.

As per the experts, we can expect, marginal improvement in coming 24 hours due to the continuation of persistent north-westerlies.

A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching on December 3; therefore, winds will once again change their direction resulting in light winds which would once again increase the pollution levels. However, we do not expect any significant improvement in pollution levels until next weekend. Levels will continue to remain in ‘very poor’ to ‘poor’ category and can touch ‘severe’ zone at isolated places.
