Situation remains grim for Delhi-NCR as air quality continued to deteriorate. With overall Air Quality Index of 361, with most places remaining in the "very poor" category and some in severe category.
Further, we would like to reiterate that no relief is in offing and that the situation will only worsen in the coming weeks.
According to Skymet Weather, weather conditions would continue to be unfavourable along with persistent stubble burning and vehicular pollution. With this, residents need to gear up for highly polluted Diwali this year.
Winds, humidity and temperatures are the three factors responsible for bringing the pollution as well as its cessation. Rains are the ultimate solution for dissipating the pollutants from the atmosphere.
As per weathermen, northwestern plains have been battling dry weather conditions for quite a long time now. There have been series of Western Disturbances over Jammu and Kashmir but they have failed to give rains over the northwestern plains of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi-NCR. However, they impact the wind pattern.
In wake of this, pollution in Delhi started increasing at the beginning of October only. Now, a fresh Western Disturbance is seen over Western Himalayas and wind pattern has been changed to easterly winds. These winds are associated with increase in pollution, because one they are humid in nature and secondly their speed is light during this time of the year.
At present, depth of pollution is up to 3000 ft. Along with this, depth of light winds indicate that we do not expect any let up in the pollution in the weeks to come. Until and unless, winds become dry and pick up the speed, no significant clearance is likely in the existing situation.
Till then, we can only take precautionary measures such as avoiding any kind of physical activity in open, minimal use of vehicles, wearing mask, stoppage of construction work, etc.
